20 die of ‘Cholera’ in Cross River community

A suspected cholera outbreak in the Ekeureku hamlet in the Cross River’s Abi Local Government Area may have claimed the lives of twenty people.

Ten communities in the Ekeureku community have reportedly been hit by the suspected outbreak since Thursday.

Iwara Iwara, the Cross River Ministry of Health’s permanent secretary, confirmed the epidemic but said he was unable to provide an estimate of the number of fatalities.

A health rapid response team had been created by the state government, he told them, and it had already begun working in the neighborhood next to Ebonyi.

According to a village chief who asked to remain anonymous, it all started when several residents began experiencing acute diarrhoea and dehydration.

He claimed that the initial assumption regarding the illness was that it was related to the dry season.

“We found that the illness was spreading quickly this time and was killing victims shortly after giving out watery stools.

“As of Saturday, more than 20 people had died among the 10 villages from suspected cholera,” he said.

The village chief continued by saying that the area had sent an SOS to its residents who were employed in the medical field and that, based on the response they had thus far got, the WHO and UNICEF will soon arrive to control the situation.

According to The News Agency of Nigeria, Ekeureku is an agricultural town that has struggled with a shortage of drinkable water and adequate medical services.

Agbara, Ngarabe, Ekureku-be, Akpoha, Akare-for, Anong, Emenekpon, Etegevel, Egboronyi, and Emegeh are the ten villages that make up the Ekeureku community.
