35 million Twitter accounts will be deleted today – Musk
Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, has announced his plans to delete over 10 million accounts from the microblogging service on Sunday.
In a tweet, Musk stated that the accounts, which are managed by software, will be shocked 24 hours later.
As a follow-up tweet, Musk posted the following characters to elaborate on what he meant:
As soon as he purchased the firm in October, the Twitter CEO made the removal of bot accounts from Twitter a top priority.
When asked when time the bot account purge would start, Musk responded, “no later than noon” on December 12.
Bot accounts are Twitter accounts that are automatically programmed to post or engage in conversation with tweets based on predetermined themes and content.
Many bot accounts are beneficial to Twitter users and safe to use, while some are programmed to push harmful content. Musk thinks that some users of these bot accounts conceal their identities and conveniently escape accountability.
According to a study published in 2017 by Indiana University and the University of Southern California, bot accounts make approximately 15% of all active Twitter accounts. According to Twitter, the percentage of bot accounts in 2014 was at 8.5%. Musk thinks the figures are higher now.
Even the researchers’ 15% estimate is a cautious one because “these complicated bots may be active on Twitter, and consequently included in our datasets, and may have been wrongly identified as humans,” they stated in their report.
According to Statista, there are 237 million daily active users on Twitter. About 35 million accounts, or 15% of all Twitter users, are active every day.
Such a large-scale deletion of social media accounts won’t go ignored. Most social media influencers will see a decline in followers. Long-inactive Twitter accounts may also be at risk of having their accounts accidentally deactivated.
