African team will win the World Cup in 15 to 20 years – Regragui
After his team finished fourth in Qatar, Morocco coach Walid Regragui predicted that an African team will win the World Cup over the next “15 to 20 years.”
The Atlas Lions, who made history by becoming the first ever African World Cup semifinalist team, fell to Croatia 2-1 in the third place play-off on Saturday, but they still captivated Qatar’s attention.
Africa will receive at least nine berths, up from five, at the 2026 World Cup, which will be staged in the USA, Canada, and Mexico and feature 48 teams.
We’re going to learn with nine people. I’m confident that an African team will win the World Cup in 15, 20, or more because we’ll have learned,” Regragui remarked.
“We have a hurdle to jump. Building on that requires effort and motivation. This DNA is being created for the entire continent, not just for Morocco.
After finishing first in a group that featured third-place finishers Belgium and Croatia from the 2018 World Cup, Morocco advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Spain and Portugal.
The defending champions, France, lost their run in the semi-finals, but Regragui has pushed his team to build on their historic performance by winning the Africa Cup of Nations the following year.
Though we’ve made more progress than anticipated, it’s not enough. It must serve as a model for the future. Everyone (in Africa), in my opinion, will benefit from the experience.
“We have a bright future ahead of us, and we’ll keep advancing.
“Of course, one of our goals is to one day win the World Cup.
Going forward, there will be more pressure on us, and maybe other African teams will follow our lead. “We’ve demonstrated that we can compete with elite teams. These games are determined by incredibly tiny aspects.”
