Barcelona Banned From Making January Signings
Due to La Liga’s financial fair play regulations, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has acknowledged the club might not be allowed to make any signings in the January transfer window.
Laporta asserted that the club’s finances are “strong” once more, with an estimated income of €1.23 billion and a forecasted profit of €274 million this season.
“We had to make some levers, which were economic operations that saved the club from ruin, and now the club is in economic recovery.
“But despite that, according to the rules of financial fair play of the Spanish league, we cannot sign,” Laporta told Spanish news agency EFE.
They were attempting to persuade LaLiga “to be more flexible,” he continued.
For more than €700 million, Barcelona sold a 49% interest in Barca Studios as well as 25% of their domestic broadcast rights.
This made it possible for the Catalans to spend almost €150 million to sign Jules Kounde, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski.
As the 2022 World Cup break approaches, Barcelona leads the Spanish top division with 37 points, two more than rival Real Madrid.
This looks set to be a huge blow for the Catalans amidst reported interest in signing Liverpool player, Fabinho Tavares ahead of the transfer window.
The season has been somewhat a divisive one for Barcelona seeing as the club’s Champions League hopes met an untimely end in the hands of Inter Milan and Bayern Munich in the group stages, to set up an eventual meeting with Manchester United in the Europa League.
However, the La Liga side still holds a commanding lead at the top of the La Liga table ahead of Real Madrid at the moment.
