Don Jazzy: Why I drew inspiration from Portable’s Fames for my Artistes

The Nigerian music producer Don Jazzy claims that he inspired his Marvin Records signees by Portable’s ascent to fame.
Top musicians including Korede Bello, Johnny Drille, Ladipoe, Rema, Crayon, and Ayra Starr are signed to Marvin Records.
The 40-year-old said he chose the controversial singer to demonstrate to his artists how engaging fans may bend the algorithm in their favor in an interview with music journalist Joey Akan.
Don Jazzy claimed that he could have employed BNXN, who had a number of hit songs at the time Portable was still trying to gain notoriety with “Zazoo Zehh,” but chose the latter instead.
The music executive also discussed the influence of social media and how Portable has benefited from the algorithm.
“When someone like Zazu came out, I was looking at various celebrities on social media. There is Buju, who is an amazing and fantastic musician, but I don’t think social media followings are all that important. However, Zazu gained a million Instagram followers faster than Buju, who had about seven number-one songs in the year, when he released his album, he said.
