Elon Musk’s Twitter ban of journalists sparks outrage throughout the world

On Friday, government leaders, advocacy groups, and journalistic organizations throughout the world reacted angrily to Twitter’s unprecedented suspension of at least five journalists over claims that they had disclosed the owner Elon Musk’s whereabouts in real time.

European Union, French, German, British, and British officials all denounced the suspensions, with some claiming the platform threatened press freedom.

Critics saw the incident—dubbed the “Thursday Night Massacre” by one prominent security researcher—as new proof that the billionaire, who calls himself a “free speech absolutist,” purges speech and users he finds objectionable.

Tesla’s (TSLA.O) shares fell 4.7% on Friday, posting their worst weekly drop since March 2020 as investors grew more concerned about Musk’s propensity for distraction.

Tesla (TSLA.O), an electric vehicle manufacturer run by Musk, saw its stock decline 4.7% on Friday and post its biggest weekly loss since March 2020 as investors grew more concerned about his propensity for distraction and the weakening global economy.

The French minister of industry, Roland Lescure, stated on Friday that he would stop using Twitter after Elon Musk suspended journalists.

The suspensions left Melissa Fleming, the head of communications for the UN, “very upset,” and she tweeted that “media freedom is not a toy.”

Twitter received a warning from the German Foreign Office that the ministry had a concern with actions that threatened press freedom.

The suspensions resulted from a dispute over the ElonJet Twitter account, which used information that was readily accessible to follow Musk’s private plane.

Despite Musk’s earlier post stating that he would not suspend ElonJet in the name of free expression, Twitter suspended the account on Wednesday along with others that tracked private aircraft.

Within a short period of time, Twitter modified its privacy policies to forbid the dissemination of “live location information.”
