Global 5G Subscriptions To Hit One Billion – Report

According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, 5G subscriptions are expected to increase gradually in the GCC region at a rate of 30 percent on average every year.

Nicolas Blixell, Vice President and Head of Gulf Council Countries at Ericsson Middle East and Africa.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region’s 5G subscriptions are expected to progressively increase from 15 to 71 million up until the end of 2028, accounting for 86 percent of all connections at that time, according to the November 2022 edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report.

Currently, 72% of GCC mobile users use 4G, while just 20% of all subscribers use 5G. The expected increase in 5G subscribers will cause the number of 4G subscriptions to decline from 55 million in 2022 to 8 million in 2028. From 25 GB in 2022 to 53 GB in 2028, the average monthly data traffic per smartphone in the GCC will almost quadruple.

Nicolas Blixell, Vice President and Head of Gulf Council Countries at Ericsson Middle East and Africa, responds to the examination of various service offerings by communication service providers: “5G is projected to be the segment with the quickest development. The most recent Ericsson Mobility Report demonstrates that demand for and growth in Fixed Wireless Access are also exceeding our projections. It is interesting that local providers of communication services have been increasing their B2B opportunities.

Despite existing and forecasted economic challenges in many regions of the world, it is still anticipated that there will be more than one billion worldwide 5G subscriptions by the end of this year and five billion by the end of 2028. By the end of 2028, 55% of all subscriptions, or five billion users, are expected worldwide. Around 70% of mobile traffic is expected to be carried by 5G networks during that time period, which will also account for all recent traffic growth. 85% of the population will reportedly be covered by 5G.
