Injured, sick Nigerians to get money under Employee Compensation Act

The Employee Compensation Act (ECA) 2010 was given final approval by the Nigerian government on Monday.

Following an emergency council meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Minister of Labor and Employment Chris Ngige spoke to the media.

The former Employee Compensation Act, often known as “Workmen Compensation,” is replaced by the current law, which is administered by the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).

He noted that the Act had been implemented in the private sector and urged the federal, state, and municipal governments to follow suit in order to protect employees.

According to the Act, a worker who gets hurt, had an accident, developed an illness, became disabled, or passed away while working shall be paid.

Ngige reaffirmed the instruction that all employees of departments, ministries, and other organizations should be covered by a percentage contribution.

One percent of the compensation is being paid as an insurance premium. You pay it, and it protects your employee from these job injury accidents, he said.

The council instructed the Minister of Finance and the Budget Office to include it as a social contribution in the annual budget.
