KWARA HOSPITAL: AC explosion behind UITH inferno – Fire Service

The Kwara State Fire Service has determined that an explosion from an air conditioning system caused the late-night Sunday fire that destroyed the pharmacy mini-store of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
The pharmacy’s mini-store was on the last floor of Building 7, and the fire only affected that portion of the building. The two-story structure, which housed 12 wards, a laboratory, and cash offices, was spared major damage.
The Kwara State Fire Service’s Head of Media and Publicity, Hassan Adekunle, said on Monday that the department’s quick response to the incident stopped additional damage.
The Kwara State Fire Service responded quickly to a fire incident at Building 7, final floor, notably at the Pharmacy’s mini-store of the UNILORIN Teaching Hospital, on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at approximately 19:31 hours.
“The fire brigade started working to put out the fire and stop more damage as soon as they arrived.
Fortunately, the two-story building that housed 12 wards, two pharmacies, a side lab, and cash offices was saved from significant damage; the only areas damaged by the fire were an office and the pharmacy’s mini-store.
According to investigations, the fire started in an office where an air conditioner had been running nonstop since Friday, which resulted in an excessive accumulation of heat and eventually caused the spread. Adekunle said
Adekunle pleaded with locals to put safety first and watch out for fire hazards in the future.
The Kwara State Fire Service Director emphasized the need of putting safety first at all times and urged the public to be watchful and proactive in averting similar tragedies in the future, he continued.
Remember how a different fire incident in Ilorin’s Tanke district last Tuesday destroyed property valued at millions of Naira?
Adekunle told reporters that the combustible nature of the building’s components and the lack of fire-retardant elements were factors in the fire’s escalation.
