May Day Surprise: New Minimum Wage Will Take Effect From May 1, 2024 – FG

Nigerian workers received a welcome surprise on May Day. Minister of State Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, announced a new minimum wage will be implemented, effective May 1st, 2024.

While negotiations by the Tripartite Committee are ongoing, workers won’t be left in the lurch. Though details remain under wraps, the new minimum wage is expected to address rising living costs.

This news comes after persistent calls from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for an upward review. They proposed a significant increase to N615,000, highlighting the inadequacy of the current N30,000 minimum wage, which some states haven’t even implemented.

President Tinubu, through Vice President Kashim Shettima, acknowledged the contributions of Nigerian workers and expressed his administration’s openness to the committee’s recommendations. Additionally, he emphasized the government’s reform agenda aimed at national progress.

With the new minimum wage on the horizon, Nigerian workers can look forward to a potential pay increase to ease financial burdens.
