NBC fines Channels TV N5m over Baba-Ahmed’s interview

Channels Television was hit with a fine of N5 million by the National Broadcasting Commission for violating the law when it aired a show featuring Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice presidential candidate for the Labour Party.

This information is found in a letter dated March 27 and written to the television station’s CEO.

The letter was acquired exclusively by The News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja.

The document was signed by Balarabe Ilelah, the director-general of the commission, and was titled “Broadcast of an Inciting Interview, A Sanction.”

Part of it read, “The NBC monitored the transmission of a live interview of Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice presidential candidate for the Labour Party, by Politics Today host Seun Okibaloye on March 22.

Due to electoral irregularities, according to Dr. Baba-Ahmed, swearing in a president on May 29, 2023, will be unconstitutional.

He pointed out that the transmission broke some rules of the broadcasting code because it was explosive and might cause a riot.

Channels Television is hereby sanctioned and shall pay a penalty of N5,000,000 (five million naira) only in the first instance for the following offenses, he said.

He further stated that the television network would face harsher penalties for any future violations.

The NBC Director-General stated, “You are advised to pay within two weeks from the day of receipt of this letter or the penalty will be graduated.”
