Op-Ed: Aluko, Palliative and emerging Second fiddle syndrome By Abdulkareem Olatunji Yusuf

Although the much awaited Federal Government Palliative through the federal lawmakers for Ilorin East/South Federal Constituency took almost 4 months when others already got, to be delivered, we appreciate Hon. Yinka Aluko, nonetheless.
However, in acknowledging the final distribution of the Federal Government (FG) palliatives by Hon. Yinka Aluko, it is essential to address the unfortunate delay of almost four months. While this delay is undoubtedly unjustified and has resulted in prolonged suffering for many constituents, now that it is here, all focus must be on the bird at hand and birds being aimed by the constituents in the future.
For the records, It is important to note that, majority of the other National Assembly contingents already distributed their FG palliatives even before commencement of the Holy month of Ramadan, they’ve also extended additional support to their constituents, especially in the spirit of the much cherished Ramadan season.
Some representatives have even gone the extra mile by providing Sallah packages and various other succors to not only the constituents, but even party members alike.
This comparison highlights the need for Hon. Aluko to double-up, catch-up and wake-up to his responsibilities towards the people he’s fortune to represent.
That said, going back to the Palliative being distributed, we must ensure transparency and accountability throughout the process, thus, it is imperative that Hon. Aluko discloses specific details regarding the distribution of the FG palliatives.
The following information should be made readily available with a clear justification for its importance:
1) Total Number of 50kg Bags of Rice Delivered: This figure will provide clarity on the quantity of rice provided by the FG to Hon. Yinka Aluko for onward distribution to the constituents. This disclosure, we enable the general public independently evaluate allocation and justify the parameters employed.
2) Weight of Rice After Rebagging: It is essential to understand how the allocated rice has been repackaged and whether it has been done in a manner that is fair and transparent to all recipients. Thus, the weighted information will assist in guiding a fair assessment of the distribution procedure towards measuring the possibility or otherwise of the Palliative solving the intended purposes.
3) Financial Implications of Rebagging: The financial aspect of rebagging the FG palliative should be disclosed to demonstrate the cost incurred and the source. This will help reveals whether resources have been utilized effectively and whether any potential wastage or mismanagement has occurred.
4) Distribution Modalities: It is imperative to understand the specific methods employed in distributing the palliatives. Hon. Aluko should provide a comprehensive explanation of the measures adopted to ensure equitable distribution to vulnerable constituents. The strategies employed must take into account the diverse needs and circumstances of the constituents to ensure that the palliatives reach those who need them the most, without unnecessary fear or favour.
It’s worth nothing that the Federal Constituency booast of arguably the largest diversity in the Senatorial District, with more rural areas and Christians comparatively.
Taking care of these minorities and more, which can be herculean can be effortlessly surmounted if our Honourable takes into confidence Community Based Associations, Traditional and Religious rulers among others throughout the process of distribution planning, implementation and evaluation.
The terse feedback gotten thus far, isn’t encouraging and it’s hoped that the modalities will be urgently worked on, so it’ll serve the majority good.
Away from Palliative, while it is commendable that Hon. Yinka Aluko has commenced the distribution of FG palliatives, the delay in doing so should not be overlooked. It is critical that he upholds his responsibilities by improving his constituency engagement, fostering partnerships with relevant bodies, and actively involving stakeholders. By taking these steps, Hon. Aluko can demonstrate his commitment to effectively representing his constituents and navigating challenges such as delay with more efficiency.
Ultimately, it is imperative that all representatives fulfill their duties in a timely and transparent manner, ensuring that the welfare of the people remains a top priority.
