Op-Ed: The Progressive Leadership of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq Transforming Kwara State — Gadaff

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq’s administration has been characterized by a strong commitment to development, transparency, and inclusive governance. Since assuming office, Governor Abdulrasaq has delivered on several fronts, driving transformation across various sectors in Kwara State. His leadership has established a framework for sustainable development and improved the lives of residents, positioning the state for continued growth.

One of the most visible impacts of Governor Abdulrasaq’s administration is the improvement in infrastructure. His government has focused on building and rehabilitating critical road networks, rural electrification, and access to potable water across communities. The administration cleared the backlog of teachers’ salaries and provided necessary teaching materials to ensure that public schools are functional and competitive.

Moreover, his administration’s focus on the renovation of dilapidated schools and the construction of new classrooms is addressing the issue of overcrowded and outdated school facilities. Kwara State is also a key beneficiary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) grants with counter funds, which have been effectively utilized to train teachers and improve learning outcomes. The administration’s “KwaraLEARN” initiative is using technology to boost literacy and numeracy skills, helping students develop critical skills for the future.

Governor Abdulrasaq’s government has placed a strong emphasis on healthcare, ensuring that Kwarans have access to quality medical services. His administration rehabilitated primary healthcare centers across the state, ensuring that even rural communities have access to basic health services. The establishment of more general hospitals, provision of medical equipment, and recruitment of healthcare workers have enhanced the healthcare system’s capacity.

The introduction of the Kwara Health Insurance Scheme has also been a game-changer. It provides affordable healthcare to thousands of Kwarans, particularly vulnerable populations. The government has also launched immunization campaigns and maternal health programs, reducing infant and maternal mortality rates. The change in the face of our health care facility had gained applaud from all stakeholders, traditional rulers are equally not left out of this commendations.

Through strategic partnerships and policies, Governor Abdulrasaq’s administration has stimulated economic growth and job creation in Kwara State. The empowerment of young artisans with startup tools for their different vocations through the International Vocational, Technical, and Entrepreneurship College (IVTEC) Ajese IPO has provides Kwarans with the skills needed for self-employment, while the promotion of agriculture as a business has encouraged youth and women to engage in farming, with access to loans, seeds, and extension services.

Under his administration, the Kwara State Social Investment Program (KWASSIP) has empowered thousands of residents through various schemes, such as “Owo Arugbo,” a cash transfer program for the elderly, and “Kwarapreneurs,” which provides loans for young entrepreneurs.

Governor Abdulrasaq has earned praise for promoting transparency and accountability in governance. His administration was the first in Kwara State to conduct an open public budget review, involving civil society organizations, traditional rulers, and the general public. This inclusiveness has built trust between the government and citizens, ensuring that funds are judiciously allocated and spent on critical development projects.
