Parents of an arrested university student ask Aisha Buhari, “Please, pardon our son.”

Parents of Aminu Azare, a student at the Federal University of Technology, Dutse, who was detained after making the accusation that Aisha Buhari, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, was living fat off the money of the poor, have urged the first lady to pardon their son and free him.

A tweet Mr. Azare posted in June about the allegation against Mrs. Buhari went viral five months later, leading to his arrest. Mr. Azare is a final-year student of environmental management and toxicology at the university.

He tweeted with a picture of Mrs. Buhari attached.

Shehu Baba-Azare, the arrested student’s uncle, claimed the family is asking with the president’s wife to pardon their son in an interview with BBC Hausa on Monday.

He claimed that until their son’s colleague informed them five days after the arrest that he had not been seen for days, the family was unaware of the arrest.

He said that Mr. Azare was kidnapped on November 17 and carried to Abuja, where he was beaten and humiliated in front of Mrs. Buhari.

The father was unaware of the arrest, so… Aminu (Mr. Azare) notified his father that he was being held in Abuja by security personnel over the phone the next morning, Monday. He claimed that after being assaulted and admonished at the State House in front of the president’s wife, he was then transferred to an unidentified place and locked.

Mr. Baba – Azare stated, “The father afterwards informed me that the university management (Federal University Dutse) called to advise him that they were not aware of the arrest.

“We are obviously disturbed. Some of these arrests are still pending resolution. She is a mother too, so we are begging her to pardon our son. Allow her to forget and forgive. We’re begging her,” Mr. Baba-Azare remarked.

Aliyu Abdullahi, Mrs. Buhari’s spokesperson, stated that he was in a meeting when approached by PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr. Abdullahi immediately responded, “I’m at a meeting right now,” when the reporter introduced himself. I’m in a meeting right now. He then hung up. Later messages regarding the matter were sent to him, but he didn’t reply.

Young Nigerians have criticized Mrs. Buhari for being intolerant on Twitter in response to the student’s incarceration.

Human rights organization Amnesty International demanded the student’s unconditional release in a statement over the event.

Amnesty International requests that the authorities free him from his wrongful confinement and guarantee that everyone who is thought to have committed acts of torture or other wrongdoing against him is brought to account.
