Poland 2-0 Saudi Arabia: Lewandowski Gets First Ever World Cup Goal
Poland beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 to go top in group D in a scintillating match. Despite Saudi Arabia putting on an impressive display and creating decent chances, they failed to get on the score sheet heading into the final match of the group and making their qualification chances slimmer.
Saudi Arabia players came into the game with confidence and obvious motivation after being promised a Rolls Royce Phantom each by Saudi Prince Bin Salman for their win against Argentina. They set the tempo and moved the ball around quick in the opening 15 minutes.
Mohammed Kanno was a stand-out performer in midfield for the Saudis with defence-splitting passes and even hitting a beautiful in-bound first touch shot. The Saudi’s exploits led to a flurry of yellow cards for the polish.
The Polish players came back into the game gaining possesion and confidence. Their relentless attacking efforts were rewarded in the 39th minute as Piotr Zielenski put a Lewandowski pass into the roof of the net to make it 1-0.
A chance at an equaliser for the Saudis after a VAR awarded penalty was thwarted by Juventus and Polish number one Wojciech Szczesny in first half added time. The rebound was wasted by Al Burayk who knocked it over the bar and into the stands.
The green falcons came into the second half determined to equalise replicating the energy against Argentina by creating attacking momentum with some good chances that weren’t converted.
Striker Arkadiusz Milik almost got on the scoresheet in the 64th minute with a diving header but the crossbar came to the Saudi’s rescue.
