Protest as a motorcyclist is killed, Enforcing a ban by Lagos police officers

Stephen Alabi, alias Doctor, a biker, was allegedly shot and killed by police officers assigned to the Sagamu Road Police Division of the Lagos State Police Command in Sabo Market in the state’s Ikorodu region.

When the policemen arrived to seize motorcycles from riders breaking the state’s ban on motorcycle operations, Alabi and his colleagues were reportedly in a park adjacent to the Sabo Market.

While speaking with our correspondence, a biker named Olawale Olawuwo claimed that Alabi intervened when police officers tried to take his colleague’s bike and one of the officers shot Alabi.

“The incident occurred on Thursday, and motorcycle riders were in our park near the Sabo Market’s front entrance when policemen raided the area to seize motorcycles,” stated Olawuwo. The dead encountered them at the market’s entrance gate at 3 o’clock as they were ready to take a bike from a biker.

According to information obtained by Newscrescent, “Alabi was attempting to resolve the conflict between the motorcycle and the policemen when one of the officers cocked his gun and began firing; one of the stray shots struck Alabi.

We tried going to the Sagamu Road Police Station, but were told that the policemen there would detain us if we went there because the policeman who fired the bullet that hit Alabi was from the station. We don’t know why the policemen started shooting.

While regretting the tragedy, another rider who only revealed his name as Adam stated that after Alabi was shot, he was sent to the Ikorodu General Facility but was turned away, and that he later passed away while receiving care at a private hospital.

He continued, “Investigations are proceeding to determine all the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Motorcycle riders have accused the police of shooting them while enforcing the prohibition on their operations in several areas of Lagos State.

A security guard, Koleosho Abayomi, requested justice a few months ago at the Lekki Peninsula Scheme II in the Eti Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State when he said a police officer shot him in the thigh.

Abayomi, who was confined to a bed as a result of the assault’s injuries, said the police were executing the law when the incident occurred.
