Reps seek better welfare package for Journalists
Better benefits and more chances for Nigerian journalists have been demanded by some House of Representatives members.
The decision was taken by the MPs on Sunday in Abuja at the award event hosted by the House of Representatives Press Corps.
Despite the value of journalists’ work to Nigeria, some voiced sadness about how they were treated there.
Everything must be done, according to Magaji Aliyu, head of the House of Representatives Committee on Power, to ensure that journalists are dedicated to their work.
He praised the corps for making sure that parliamentarians act honorably in both plenary and committee settings.
Mr. Aliyu expressed his happiness at the milestone reached by the ninth House and added that the speaker’s leadership skills were responsible for making it possible.
Benjamin Kalu, the spokesperson for the House of Representatives, also spoke and claimed that the corps had stabilized the National Assembly’s reputation.
He claimed that journalists were not being treated fairly and suggested that more should be done to protect their welfare.
“I value the corps for the stability they have brought to the National Assembly’s public image. This has never happened before, he said.
According to him, confidence has increased from where it was to this point.
People are starting to realize how important this democratic fulcrum is to the development of our democracy, he added.
