UK’s PM Sunak to announce $304m in new military aid for Ukraine

Rishi Sunak, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, will soon reveal a new $304 million military aid package for Ukraine to support its counteroffensive against Russia.

According to a statement from the prime minister’s office released on Monday, the package contains “hundreds of thousands of rounds of artillery” and intends to provide “a sustained flow of crucial artillery ammunition to Ukraine throughout 2023.”

According to his office, Sunak will make the declaration at a Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) session later on Monday in Latvia.

The JEF summit was called to discuss the “ongoing efforts to counter Russian aggression in the Nordic and Baltic regions,” according to a statement. It brings together leaders from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Sunak will urge his counterparts from the Nordic, Baltic, and Dutch nations to continue or increase their support for Ukraine in 2023 during the meeting.

The statement continued, “The UK is already Europe’s top supplier of defensive assistance to Ukraine, including providing Multiple Launch Rocket Systems and lately, 125 anti-aircraft guns.

The UK has given over $7.43 billion in aid since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a German organization that keeps track of aid to Kiev.

According to the Kiel Institute, the UK is the second-largest contributor country to Ukraine behind the United States, which has committed to providing $51 billion in humanitarian, financial, and military aid.

According to Sunak’s office, the British leader briefed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week on the most recent aid.
