University of Ilorin Grapples with Soaring Electricity Bills: A Call for Collective Action

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) is facing a significant financial challenge due to a recent hike in electricity tariffs imposed by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). In an email addressed to staff and students on June 6th, 2024, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, expressed his deep concern over the situation.


Prof. Egbewole revealed a startling statistic: UNILORIN’s monthly electricity bill has surged from N70 million to a staggering N230 million. This over threefold increase has been labeled “unsustainable” by the Vice-Chancellor, highlighting the immense strain it places on the university’s budget.


In response to this crisis, Prof. Egbewole emphasized the urgent need for a two-pronged approach. Firstly, he appealed to both staff and students to adopt more responsible electricity consumption habits. Simple actions like switching off lights and electronics when not in use can collectively make a significant difference. Secondly, the Vice-Chancellor stressed the administration’s commitment to exploring cost-saving measures and alternative power solutions.


The university is actively pursuing alternative power sources to lessen its dependence on the national grid and mitigate the impact of future tariff hikes. Prof. Egbewole announced that new buildings under construction in several faculties, including Agriculture, Arts, Environmental Science, Law, and Social Sciences, will be designed with provisions for alternative power options. This forward-thinking approach demonstrates a commitment to long-term sustainability.

The vision extends beyond new structures. Efforts are underway to develop strategies for equipping all faculties and units with reliable alternative power sources. This comprehensive plan signifies a university-wide shift towards a more sustainable energy future.
