Volcano alert upped to highest level in Indonesia

Authorities raised Mount Semeru’s warning level to the highest level after it erupted on Sunday, sending scorching ash clouds a mile into the sky.

Villages nearby were evacuated as a result of the eruption of Java’s highest mountain, which is located 800 kilometers to the southeast of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre’s Hendra Gunawan said that the increased hazard level “means the danger has affected the people’s settlement and the volcano’s activity has risen.”

The southern Okinawa prefecture’s islands of Miyako and Yaeyama may see a tsunami, according to a warning from Japan’s weather bureau, according to Kyodo news agency.

No casualties or injuries were immediately recorded during the eruption, but after the threat level was upgraded to 4, Gunawan issued a warning to locals not to travel within eight kilometers (five miles) of the crater.

According to local administration chief for Lumajang, where the volcano is located, Thoriqul Haq, “a number of people have started to go down,” broadcaster Kompas TV reported.

Last time Mount Semeru erupted, at least 51 people were killed.
