Wike approves N7bn for primary school teachers’ salaries in FCT

The Federal Capital Territory’s Minister, Nyesom Wike, has approved the payment of N7 billion to settle 25% of the primary school teachers’ salary arrears.
Danlami Hayyo, the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s Secretary for Education, revealed this on Thursday during a familiarization visit to the FCT Universal Basic Education Board management in Abuja.
He stated that the Area Councils will be responsible for paying the remaining 60% of the past-due arrears, with the FCTA covering 40% of the total.
He added that the FCT and Area Councils have been ordered by the Administration to make payments within three months, stressing that the money will be withheld at the source and sent to them.
“The main goal of this visit is to determine how the secretariat and the Board can work together to fulfill the Board’s mandate.”Thank God, the Board not only has the BESDA account but also counterpart financing. Hayyo declared, “I swear that the resources from UBEC and UBEB will be used to address the challenges.”
This happened just three days after primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory held a protest over non-salary payments.
The teacher had already requested action from President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
