U20 AFCON: ‘Bronze better than nothing’ — Dare commends Flying Eagles
The Flying Eagles finished third at the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cairo, Egypt, and were praised for their performance by Sunday Dare, the minister of sports and youth development, on Friday.
Nigeria won the bronze medal by defeating Tunisia 4-0 and setting a tournament record by placing 13 times on the podium.
Dare urged the players to apply the lessons from the Egypt competition as they get ready for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia in May, saying that the bronze medal was better than nothing.
We were unhappy that we couldn’t participate in the championship game or take home the trophy as we had hoped, but this resounding victory over Tunisia has allayed our sorrow from last Monday’s game against the Gambia, he remarked.
We must now concentrate on performing significantly better at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. There is not much time left, but I think the coaches now understand where they should concentrate on strengthening the team.
On Saturday, Senegal and The Gambia will square off in the U20 AFCON championship game.
