FG Should Suspend 2023 Election—Afe Babalola

The Chancellor, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), said the 1999 Constitution under which the 2023 polls will be held cannot produce new leaders with new ideas.
Babalola said his earlier position in April 2022 on the need for the Federal Government to suspend the 2023 election in order to make way for a people’s constitution before the election was still valid. He made this statement on Wednesday in Ado Ekiti at a press conference with the theme “Nigeria’s Huge External Debt and the 1999 Constitution: 2013 in Perspective.”
“Any election held under the 1999 Constitution will only result in recycling the same people who have driven Nigeria to grinding poverty, unemployment, inadequate funding for education, insecurity, and enormous external debt,” the legal scholar was cited as saying.
Babalola stated no electoral candidate can save the country with the 1999 constitution and insisted that the country’s current reality demands a new constitution similar to the 1960 and 1963 constitutions
