51.3% of eligible voters for 2023 elections are youths – INEC
51.3 percent of those who were eligible to vote in the February elections, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), were young people.
Festus Okoye, the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Voter Education Committee, made this statement during a discussion about the election’s impact on young people in Abuja.
Of the 93.5 million people who have registered to vote, 48 million are young people, according to Okoye, who added that they continue to be a key factor in determining election results.
Therefore, he urged the young people to cast as many votes as possible in the election, claiming that it will be technology-driven.
He stated: “For the conduct of the election in the 176,846 polling places across the federation, the commission has already received possession of the entire number of the Bimodal Voter’s Accreditation System. In order to prepare for emergencies, more BVAS would be placed in the 8,809 registration places spread around the nation.
“On election day, only accredited voters would be permitted to cast ballots according to the BVAS’ offline functionality.
Only registered voters who appear at the polling places with their Permanent Voters Cards will be permitted to cast a ballot.
“The commission had hired more than 1.4 million ad hoc election workers for the conduct of the general election in 2023, and insurance coverage against election-related risks, particularly potential attack, had been arranged for them.
The rules of the current 2022 Electoral Act (as amended) are stricter than those in the preceding 2010 Electoral Act (as amended) regarding punishment for any act of electoral infraction against electoral officers.
