Wike to Buhari: Flouting s’court ruling on old naira notes an invitation to anarchy

The governor of Rivers, Nyesom Wike, has requested that President Muhammadu follow the supreme court’s decision over the old naira notes.

On Friday, Wike gave a speech at the Rivers campaign rally’s opening ceremony in Ngo Town, the state’s Andoni LGA.

Buhari stated on Thursday that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been instructed to extend the use of the previous N200 notes until April 10.

The president added that for 60 days, all old N1,000 and N500 notes will continue to be redeemable at the CBN and other approved locations.

Buhari issued the order notwithstanding the supreme court’s decision that the old notes continue to be valid until the outcome of a dispute brought by several state governors.

The supreme court declared its decision regarding the old notes to be final on Wednesday and postponed making a decision until February 22.

Commenting about the situation, Wike stated that the naira redesign strategy has caused misery for the populace and that he is against it.

I have faith in a nation that upholds the law. The supreme court should be respected by the president, and if it isn’t, you’re talking about anarchy, according to Wike.

“As a result, we from the state of Rivers oppose Mr. President’s stance for disobeying the supreme court’s ruling.

“We desire democracy, and democracy cannot exist without the rule of law. Thus, we will not support any politician who backs a policy that causes misery for the populace.

“Since you [were] appointed to serve the public, you [must] examine whatever policy you must enact. Think again if your policy would cause individuals to suffer.
