AFCON 2023: I want Salah and Egypt to crash out at the group stage – Jurgen Klopp
Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, has publicly stated his feelings over Mo Salah’s departure from the Merseyside club in order to play for Egypt at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking to the media prior to Liverpool’s FA Cup encounter against Arsenal—a contest they will play without the key Egyptian—Klopp expressed his thoughts.
Recently, Mo Salah became a member of the esteemed group of Premier League greats who have scored 150 goals or more for a single team.
With 18 goals this season, Salah is also Liverpool’s top goal scorer and has contributed to nearly 30% of the team’s total goals scored thus far.
In his farewell letter to a great player in his team, Klopp made no secret of the fact that he was hoping Egypt would exit the African Cup of Nations early in order to get his lucky charm back.
Liverpool will also lose Japan captain Wataru Endo to the Asian Cup in addition to Mo Salah. Both players will miss crucial Liverpool games, and if Japan and Egypt advance to the championship round of their respective international tournaments, they may miss up to a month of action.
Jurgen Klopp, though, has made it clear that he does not want them to get that far in their individual competitions.
When asked who player he would employ to cover for Mo Salah while he is away on international duty, the former coach of Borussia Dortmund responded.
Seven-time champions On Sunday, January 14, Egypt’s AFCON campaign will begin with a match against Mozambique.
