New naira: Ogun Police arrest 27 suspects over destruction of banks, violence

In relation to the chaos that erupted in Sagamu on Monday morning, the Ogun State Police Command has detained 27 individuals.

This information was made public on Monday, a few hours after the violence that resulted in the damage of two banks, by SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state’s police public relations officer.

In a succinct statement, Oyeyemi claimed that the neighborhood has returned to normal.

“Normality has been restored in more areas of Sagamu currently,” he claimed. Police teams and some military personnel are being personally led by CP Frank Mba to deal with the problem.

There have been about 27 suspects detained.

Violence reportedly erupted on Monday morning in Sagamu, Ogun State, when some enraged youths who were unable to withdraw money went on the rampage.

The demonstrators blocked traffic on several roads, including the Sagamu-Benin motorway, with bonfires.

The old N200 notes and the new N1,000 notes can coexist until April 10 according to an order issued by the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.). The old N500 and N1,000 notes are no longer considered legal tender.

Two banks allegedly suffered damage, according to some people who communicated with our correspondent.

They claimed that Keynote and Union banks were the affected institutions.

Oba Babatunde Ajayi, the Akarigbo of Remo, has urged restraint.

“I encourage to people to stay calm and peaceful as we continue to engage the Federal Government,” the palace said in a statement.

“Neither the state nor the local government created this policy. As a result, the loss of life and damage to property will only make the situation worse.

“I implore our people to keep using the old notes in accordance with the Supreme Court’s decision. Anyone who accepts the outdated notes would not suffer a loss. Please remember that pledge, which I can guarantee.

“Moreover, I’m also ordering all of our market employees to keep accepting the old notes. I promise that no one will suffer as a result of having the old notes.
