Tight security as Presidential Election Petition Court delivers judgment

As the Presidential Election Petition Court prepares to issue its ruling, there is intense security at the Court of Appeal Complex, which is located in the Three Arms Zone, Shehu Shagari Way, Central Business District of Abuja.


According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), three cases contesting the results of the presidential election on February 25 received judgments.

It comes about a month after the court heard the petitioners’ final arguments, and approximately two weeks before the statutory deadlines of 180 days, within which the lawsuits filed in March must be considered and decided.


After hearing the parties’ final arguments, the five-member court panel led by Haruna Tsammani had reserved decisions on the petitions.

According to NAN, several security personnel from the military forces, police, Department of State Services (DSS), and Civil Defense are manning all of the roads leading to the Court of Appeal complex.

Within the court complex, the same formation has been put in place.

In a statement released on Monday, the Chief Registrar of the Court, Mr. Umar Bangari, said that every precaution had been taken to ensure that the judgments in the three petitions currently before the court were delivered without incident.

Only the invited members of political parties and the general public will be permitted entry into the courtroom, according to Bangari, who also claimed that proper security had been put in place.

He said that doing so would prevent traffic jams and security lapses.

Additionally, he stated that media outlets who want to broadcast the verdict live on television may do so without incurring any fees from the court.

Lawyers and journalists were being screened by security personnel as of 7.30 am, according to NAN.

Heavy security was present at all of the major government facilities, including the Federal Secretariat, the National Assembly Complex, and the entrance to the Presidential Villa.
