Chelsea see off Dortmund to reach Champions League quarter-finals
Chelsea defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in their second-leg match at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night to advance to the quarterfinal stage of the UEFA Champions League (UCL).
Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz both scored to help Chelsea overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit and advance 2-1 overall.
Mateo Kovacic hit the post for the Blues early on, but they eventually took the lead just before halftime thanks to a well-placed Sterling shot off a cross from Ben Chillwell. The Blues have been a shell of the team that won the UCL in 2021.
Early in the second half, the English fullback was again involved when one of his crosses was handled in the area, resulting in a penalty that Havertz scored on his second attempt.
The victory guarantees Chelsea’s third consecutive appearance in the round of eight.
In addition, the Blues recorded two goals in a game since December 27, 2022.
Moreover, Benfica made it to the quarterfinals after defeating Club Brugge 5-1 in the second leg in Portugal to win the match 7-1 overall.
