The president-elect of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, is asking the court of appeal for permission to see confidential documents that the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) used to conduct the election.

Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) received 6,984,520 votes, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) received 6,101,533 votes. Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the winner of the election with 8,794,726 votes.

During the court hearing on Tuesday, the president-elect stated that in order to prepare his defense against petitions that would seek to invalidate his election, he would need to check, scan, and make photocopies of some of the electoral papers.

The materials will be relevant in helping us to prepare our defence and also make comparison with the information contained in INEC’s back-end server,” Makinde said.
