Concerned APC Elders Reject Zoning, Demand Competence for 2027 Kwara Governorship

A group of influential elders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has called for a shift from zoning politics to a merit-based selection process for the 2027 governorship election, emphasizing competence, credibility, and performance over regional considerations.

In a strongly worded statement signed by the Concerned APC Elders, the group respectfully challenged the recent position of Barrister Kunle Sulyman, Chairman of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s Advisory Council, who advocated for power rotation to Kwara North.

While acknowledging the historical role of zoning in promoting inclusiveness, the elders argued that the current political climate demands a more pragmatic approach focused on sustaining the developmental strides of the AbdulRazaq administration.

“Kwara cannot afford to experiment or hand over its future to sentiment. Governance in today’s Nigeria requires a leader with vast exposure, proven administrative skills, and the ability to attract both local and foreign investments, the statement read.”

The elders lauded Governor AbdulRazaq for transforming the state through infrastructural renewal, education reform, youth empowerment, and a break from political godfatherism.

They cautioned that a regression into zoning politics could undermine these gains and jeopardize the APC’s chances at the polls.

Referencing voting patterns in recent elections, the group noted that the electorate has consistently chosen candidates based on track record and credibility rather than geography. “In 2019 and 2023, Kwarans voted not on the basis of zoning, but on credibility and desire for change,” the statement emphasized.

The elders also raised concerns about political disunity within Kwara North, noting that despite producing a governorship candidate in 2023, the region largely voted for a contender from Kwara Central. “This internal disunity raises fundamental concerns about the readiness of the region to consolidate and drive a unified agenda,” they said.

With opposition parties reportedly strategizing to exploit regional imbalances, the APC elders warned that the ruling party must field its strongest, most broadly accepted candidate to retain power. They advocated for a technocrat-politician who can continue current projects, engage with international development actors, and inspire a modern vision for Kwara State.

“We must not fall into the trap of reverting to a system that may breed mediocrity, entitlement, or political compromise,” the statement warned.

The group clarified that its position was not to exclude any zone, including Kwara North, but to insist that all aspirants meet the high standards demanded by the moment. “The APC must field a unifier, a visionary, a servant-leader with a strong track record both at home and on the global stage,” the elders concluded.
