FG will send 613 terrorists who have expressed remorse to states
613 low-risk repentant terrorists who have been rehabilitated, according to Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Lucky Irabor, would be given to their state governments for reintegration into society.
Irabor said this Wednesday in Abuja at the fifth Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC) Stakeholders’ Meeting. Maj.-Gen. Adeyemi Yekini, Chief of Defence Training and Operations, spoke on behalf of the CDS, who stated that the OPSC is handling the deradicalization and rehabilitation of the 613 individuals.
Before the individuals were transferred to their state governments, he stated that the conference would cover the Deradicalization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DRR) Programme.
Irabor pointed out that in September 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari established the OPSC as a portal for willing and repentant terrorists to lay down their guns and participate in a formal DRR program.
He defined the plan as a multi-agency, humanitarian effort that drew on the expertise of over 17 services, ministries, departments, and organizations, with assistance from friendly nations and local and international organizations.
According to the CDS, the achievements of OPSC have persisted in the area and in the diaspora, piqueing the interest of researchers from all over the world.
It’s also crucial to note that each client will receive some food and personal supplies as well as a start-up kit, according to the skill they learned during training, to help them launch new lives and small enterprises after completing the program, the official said.
Irabor advised the receiving state governments to give the ex-combatants the assistance they need to get through the difficult transitioning period in their life.
He continued, “We are optimistic that the states can employ security apparatus at their disposal to successfully track and assess the reintegrated ex-combatants by cooperating closely with local and traditional authorities.
I must stress that reducing or eliminating reoffending incidents is essential for all parties involved in the reintegration processes.
