Germany is under increasing pressure as Ukraine requests quicker arm supplies
Pressure from Western and Ukrainian officials is mounting on Germany to allow the transfer of heavy battle tanks to Ukraine. United Kingdom Defense Minister Ben Wallace said the action could mobilize support from other countries ahead of a meeting this week that the United States will host to discuss additional military assistance for Kiev.
In response to a Russian missile attack that left at least 40 people dead in an apartment building in the east-central city of Dnipro, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also emphasized the necessity for quicker armament supplies on Monday.
Defense analysts claim that Western-made battle tanks would give Ukrainian forces better protection and more precise firepower. Up until now, Ukraine has mainly relied on variants of the Soviet-era T-72 tank. However, several of Kiev’s allies have so far refrained from supplying Ukraine with more powerful weapons out of concern that doing so may push them farther into the Russian War.
According to Germany, the Leopard 2 tanks, which are among the best in the West, should only be given to Ukraine with the consent of Kyiv’s key partners.
Wallace, speaking to the UK parliament, asserted that if Berlin provided its own tanks, it would not be acting alone. 14 Challenger 2 tanks produced in Britain will be delivered by his government to Ukraine.
The question of whether a tank is an offensive or defensive weapon is one that is now being discussed in Germany. Depends on what you want to use it for, I suppose. I would guess that it is a defensive weapon system if you’re deploying it to defend your nation,” he remarked.
And I am aware that there have been reservations inside the German political establishment about going it alone. They are not alone, though.
Mateusz Morawiecki, the prime minister of Poland, pushed Germany to move quickly while he was in Berlin.
The West needs to help Ukraine far more, according to Morawiecki, who was in Berlin for a legislative event, since “Ukrainians today are fighting not just for their freedom, but also in defense of Europe.” According to comments he made, the German government must “act forcefully and send all forms of armaments to Ukraine,” according to reports from the Polish state news agency PAP.
