Legislators file a motion to remove President Dina Boluarte of Peru

A group of left-leaning legislators in Peru have filed a motion of impeachment against President Dina Boluarte for how she handled the protests that erupted after Pedro Castillo was ousted for over two months.

In the course of violent clashes between demonstrators and security personnel, 56 people have died.

Al Jazeera’s Mariana Sanchez, who is in the nation’s capital, Lima, reports that the legislators, who are Castillo’s allies, are submitting the move on the grounds of Boluarte’s purported “permanent moral incapacity.”

Just hours after Boluarte called for a “truce,” hundreds of people flocked to the streets of Lima on Tuesday, where they were met by volleys of tear gas and rock pellets.

Castillo, the country’s first head of state from a rural Andean background, attempted to end the third impeachment proceedings that were pending against his nascent administration by ordering the dissolution of Congress on December 7.

Instead, lawmakers impeached Castillo, and the national police detained him before he could seek refuge. He swore in Boluarte, his vice president.

Since then, demonstrations have grown, with Boluarte’s resignation, immediate elections, and the dissolution of Congress being demanded by Castillo’s supporters.

According to Sanchez, the lawmakers must obtain the required number of votes in order to discuss their move to impeach, which may happen on Thursday.

She mentioned that Boluarte is supported by the majority of conservative lawmakers in Congress.

According to Sanchez, Peru has had six presidents in that time. This demonstrates how deeply ingrained political instability is in Peru.
