Following the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, to resolve the ongoing leadership issue in the country, the military junta in the Niger Republic has severed ties with Nigeria.

According to the DAILY POST, ECOWAS has given the military junta a seven-day deadline to restore President Mohamed Bazoum, who was overthrown.

In order to meet with the coup leaders, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Thursday dispatched a powerful delegation to the nation.

Daily Trust notes that Niger has severed connections with Nigeria, Togo, France, and the United States but claims that the delegation led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) only met with junta leaders.

The publication reported that Radio France International paraphrased one of the coup leaders as saying on national television that “the functions of the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors of the Republic of Niger” to France, Nigeria, Togo, and the United States are ended.
