Residents take to the streets in Delta to protest the new naira shortage
Residents of Delta State are reportedly protesting in the streets about the lack of fresh naira notes available at commercial banks and Point of Sales (POS) terminals.
According to information obtained by Newscrescent Media, protests took place today (Friday) in the state’s Uvwie and Warri South Local Government Area as locals vented their resentment toward the federal government over the redesign of the nation’s currency and other hardships in Nigeria.
Numerous market women reportedly blocked the NPA Expressway and Warri-Sapele Road to stop traffic and disrupt activity. According to accounts, the demonstrators also broke into a few commercial banks close to Warri’s Main Market.
It was said that market vendors had placards with various phrases and leaf designs, complaining about their recent failure to sell their wares.
According to the report, the locals burned tires alongside the congested roadways to protest the Central Bank of Nigeria’s cashless policy (CBN).
The citizens urged commercial banks to release their funds so they could conduct their legal enterprises.
Some of the women demonstrating from the major Market axis of Warri Sapele Road to the Delta Broadcasting Station at the Edjeba axis of NPA Expressway in Warri South Local Government Area yelled, “Our fish dey decay o, our foods dey rotten.”
Security personnel reportedly sought to appease the irate merchants, but they insisted on getting their money from banks despite their efforts.
“Our children are starving, yet we are unable to sell, transfer, or withdraw money. I remained in the shop all day yesterday and made no sales. People who wanted to buy products tried to transfer money but were unsuccessful, one of the women was reported as saying by the Daily Trust.
