Senate Presidency: APC tips South East

There are signs that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will zone the Senate Presidency to the South East in order to ease locals’ concerns.

Insiders claim that the APC caucuses are in favor of electing a Senate president from the South East with Bola Tinubu, a South Westerner, taking office as president on May 29 and Kashim Shetima, a North Easterner, serving as vice president.

This was confirmed by a member of the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) who wished to remain unnamed. He said some party elders believed that zoning the third position to the South East would create a balance of power, similar to the original county tripod.

He disclosed that the majority of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) members believe that, in the inclusiveness Tinubu promised, the APC should pay to zone the Senate Presidency to the South East at a time when the number of APC senators from the region has increased to six from one in 2015.

The NWC member stated that individuals in favor of this arrangement have begun contacting other zones to secure their support.

It is in the interest of the APC to zone the number three political position to the South East, he said, “having missed out on the presidential battle in all parties at a time when the clamor for a president of Igbo descent was great.”

According to the source, the North West will generate the Speaker of the House of Representatives, while the North Central and South South would produce the Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, respectively.

With its zoning formula, he claimed, the NWC members were eager to reduce religious and tribal friction in the nation.

He claimed that there was already friction and that the party was working hard to lower it by zoning its posts, starting with the Senate Presidency to the South East.

Since 2015, the APC has not distributed leadership posts fairly, and we are dedicated to changing that with the 10th Assembly. We currently have 57 senate seats, making us the majority.
