Uphold peace, seek redress in court, AU tells aggrieved candidates
All disgruntled candidates have been asked by the African Union (AU) to uphold peace and order as they seek legal remedy for the results of the presidential and National Assembly elections held on February 25.
It reaffirmed its dedication to assisting Nigeria’s democracy in order to promote long-term growth and financial stability.
In a statement issued by its Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on Friday, the AU reached the decision and congratulated Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress for winning the presidential election.
With a total of 8,794,726 votes cast, Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission pronounced Tinubu the victor of the presidential election on Wednesday.
Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, who received a total of 6,984,520 votes, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who received a total of 6,101,533 votes, were defeated by Tinubu.
The results of the election and the selection of the former governor of Lagos state and APC National Leader as the next president-elect will be challenged in court, according to both Atiku and Obi.
With regard to this, Mahamat responded, “The Chairperson urges all stakeholders to uphold peace and the rule of law, and further urges that any post-election disagreement or grievance be pursued through the judicial system, as provided for by law.”
The Chairperson wishes to extend his sincere gratitude to H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, a former head of state of the Republic of Kenya, for his outstanding leadership while serving as the head of the African Union Election Mission to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Chairman also thanks ECOWAS and other allies for their successful cooperation in promoting a peaceful election in Nigeria.
The African Union’s commitment to assisting the sisterly Federal Republic of Nigeria in its efforts to strengthen democracy, good governance, sustainable development, and to bolster peace, security, and stability in the nation is reaffirmed by the chairperson.
