VAR official for disputed PSG Champions League penalty removed
UEFA has suspended the VAR official at the center of a contentious penalty call in Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-1 Champions League tie with Newcastle United for a match on Wednesday, the governing body of European football said AFP.
Tomasz Kwiatkowski of Poland was scheduled to serve as the video assistant referee for Real Sociedad vs. Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday in the Champions League Group D in Spain. However, he has withdrawn from the match.
His substitution was made after Kylian Mbappe’s penalty kick eight minutes into injury time on Tuesday prevented PSG from defeating Newcastle in Paris, depriving the English team of a historic triumph and sending them out of the group stage.
When Polish colleague Kwiatkowski called on on-field referee Szymon Marciniak to investigate and analyze footage of a handball in the box by Tino Livramento, Newcastle was up 1-0.
