Chrisland school to remain shut as Lagos probes safety risks affecting students

According to NAN, the Lagos commissioner for education, Folashade Adefisayo, made this announcement on Sunday.

On February 9, Whitney Adeniran, a student at Chrisland High School in Ikeja, passed away while participating in athletics at Agege Stadium.

Blessing Whitney’s mother, Adeniran, had charged Chrisland with negligence during the incident that resulted in Whitney’s demise.

She slumped in public, the school claimed, and it was dismissed as if there had been foul play in the case.

Whitney allegedly complained about her “not-too-buoyant health” a few days prior to passing away, according to Chrisland.

The state administration then disclosed that the schoolgirl’s death was caused by electrocution and suffocation, according to an autopsy.

The school was previously temporarily closed while an investigation was conducted by the state ministry of education.

According to the state, the school will remain closed while more investigations into some safety hazards that may affect other students are conducted.

The education commissioner Adefisayo made the following statement when she made the announcement: “The shutdown of the school paved the way for unrestricted investigation and afforded all stakeholders time to grieve.

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice “directed a coroner’s inquiry into the matter to identify the reason in light of the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

The autopsy was done on February 15 at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

“Asphyxia and electrocution were the causes of death, according to the March 1 autopsy report.

The DPP was instructed to provide legal counsel on the subject by the attorney general and commissioner for justice.

“The school will remain closed to further investigate the endangerment of kids and others, without prejudice to the criminal processes.”

Adefisayo claimed that during the planning of the infamous sporting event, the office of education quality assurance in her ministry met with the administration of the school to ensure adherence to child protection policies.

The inter-house sporting event’s preparation and the fallout from the terrible incident were discussed at the meeting. There were gaps that were found, the commissioner continued.

It is said that on March 2, a government delegation paid the grieving family a consoling visit.

That is not the first time that a situation involving one of its kids has put Chrisland School in the spotlight.

Once one of the Chrisland students’ sex tapes from an outing leaked online in the middle of 2022, four professors were charged.

A former employee of the Chrisland in VGC was sentenced to 60 years in prison in 2019 for defiling a two-year-old girl in 2016.
