Commotion erupts in Ondo as residents protest at CBN over rejection of old notes, police to the rescue
Ondo state people showed up in large numbers at the CBN annex in Alagbaka, Akure, to protest the rejection of the old naira notes despite the ongoing shortage and competition for them.
Police officers reportedly intervened to calm the situation as they surrounded the CBN annex in the state to bring things back to normal.
According to TheCable, it was learned that locals were upset because commercial banks and retail establishments in the state’s capital city were turning away old naira notes.
A native of Ondo state named Emmanuel Adeniyi recalled their struggles with the state’s growth and said:
“The commercial banks’ automated teller machines (ATM) are still dispensing the outdated notes, and they are rejecting the notes coming from us. Ignorance of what sort is that?
Another demonstrator at the demonstration who requested anonymity said:
“You only need to imagine. We are not giving the old notes to the bank. We are currently in this location since they told us to come and deposit the money at the CBN office.
Sadly, some banks continue to provide us old notes and no longer manually collect the old ones.
Simply said, it’s annoying. The CBN has stated that it will not change its decision to enforce the adoption of the new naira note at the specified date it had previously set, notwithstanding the Supreme Court’s order to block the deadline.
