Court stops PDP from suspending, expelling Fubara, other members loyal to Wike
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not permitted to suspend or expel Siminlalayi Fubara, the incoming governor of the state of Rivers, or Ngozi Odu for suspected anti-party conduct, according to a federal high court in Abuja.
48 PDP members, including Fubara, Odu, and others, had petitioned the court to enjoin the party and its executives from retaliating against them.
They requested that the court rule that the threat of their suspension or expulsion due to the disagreement between the party’s national executives and Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike constitutes a denial of their rights.
Inyang Ekwo, the presiding judge, gave her ruling on Tuesday and stated that the applicants’ fears were legitimate and that taking action against them would violate their right to freedom of association.
The judge further stated that the court has the authority to award compensation to those whose actions have been proven to constitute a violation of their rights.
The judge ruled that political party members cannot be suspended at will without following the party’s rules.
