IGP Launches Probe Into Adamawa REC’s Role In Controversial Poll

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Hudu Yunusa-Ari’s participation in the just-concluded supplementary Adamawa State governorship election is being investigated, according to the Nigerian Police.

This comes after the commission’s request for the IGP to look into the Yunusa-Ari’s alleged misbehavior and consider filing charges against him.

The letter from INEC dated April 18, 2023 “detailing the alleged improperness of the actions of one Barr. Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC),” was received by the police, according to a statement made by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Sunday.

Adejobi pointed out that the commission asked the police to look into the REC’s behavior and maybe bring charges against him.

In order to speed action on the letter’s contents, the inspector general, he continued, “has directed an investigative team to work in collaboration with the INEC.”

Additionally, according to the statement, Baba reaffirmed the NPF’s dedication to defending democratic principles.

He added promised Nigerians and the foreign community that no effort would be spared in determining the underlying causes of the “unwholesome conduct of the REC” and that all those implicated in the probes would be held accountable.

Recall that while collation was still taking place, Yunusa-Ari allegedly pretended to be the returning officer in order to declare All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Aishatu “Binani” Dahiru the winner.

The declaration caused a stir, which forced the exercise to be temporarily suspended.

Ultimately, Ahmadu Fintiri, the current governor, won.
