Isah Jere Idris, the acting comptroller-general (CG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has retired under President Muhammadu Buhari.

His resignation after the end of his extended one-year term and the controversy caused by various civil society organizations (CSOs) warning the presidency against considering another tenure extension.

This was stated in a memo written to Jere that was received by LEADERSHIP and contained a confidential notification of one year tenure extension expiration.

On orders from the board chairman, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the memo, dated April 17, 2023, and bearing the code number CDCFIB/APPT.CG&DCG/61/VOL.IV/74 was signed by Obasi Edozie Edmond, secretary to the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board.

Until the nomination of the CG of Immigration, Jere is required by his retirement notice to transfer his office’s responsibilities to the senior-ranking officer in the service.
