INEC Reveals What PDP Will Do after Abia Governorship Candidate Dies Few Weeks to 2023 Elections

In order to replace its governorship candidate, Professor Uche Eleazar Ikonne, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia state has been ordered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold a new governorship primary election within the next 14 days.

The instruction was given by the electoral commission in the wake of Professor Ikonne’s passing on January 25.

According to Festus Okoye, the INEC National Commissioner on Voter Education and Publicity, the direction was in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022’s provision, according to ThisDay.

Okoye also stated that because the election had not yet begun, the new Electoral Act did not permit the party’s deputy governorship candidate to instantly take the position of the gubernatorial candidate.

Only after voting has started is the deputy governorship candidate permitted to fly the flag. In order to submit to INEC, they must have a new primary within 14 days of the deceased person’s passing, according to the national commissioner.
