Manchester United target Wout Weghorst as striker signing

Manchester United are advancing with a potential loan move for Burnley striker Wout Weghorst.
Weghorst, 30, is on loan at Besiktas, where he has scored eight goals in 16 games, but United manager Erik ten Hag has earmarked the Dutchman as an ideal support striker for Anthony Martial.
Besiktas have a €10million option to sign Weghorst and Burnley did not insert a recall clause. The lack of a recall option may require negotiation between all three clubs.
United want to sign a No.9 on loan due to budgeting constraints and a lack of attainable top-class options. Besiktas have covered Weghorst’s wages in full but did not pay a loan fee.
Weghorst is aligned with Ten Hag’s transfer strategy of favouring players familiar to him or schooled in the Netherlands. Ten Hag and Weghorst also both hail from the Twente region.
Burnley signed Weghorst for £12million in January 2022 but he only scored twice as the Clarets were relegated after six years in the Premier League.
