17 killed, 22 injured in road accident in eastern China
A car collision in eastern China has resulted in at least 17 fatalities and 22 injuries.
The “major road traffic accident,” according to state television CCTV, occurred in Nanchang County in the Jiangxi province just before 1 a.m. local time on Sunday (17:00 a.m. GMT Saturday).
It cited officials who stated that the injured had been brought to a hospital and an inquiry into the accident’s cause was ongoing.
According to state-owned Hubei Daily Media Group-affiliated local news source Jimu, the accident was caused when a truck struck a funeral procession.
Before leaving for the crematorium on Sunday morning, people had been making a roadside offering to the deceased, a local woman with the last name Deng informed the source.
According to the story, they were struck by a truck, and the majority of the deceased and hurt were there at the funeral.
Another local man with the last name Gong informed the publication that they had been at the funeral when their wife perished in the collision.
He claimed that the truck had abruptly smashed into the back of the queue, plowing through the crowd before arriving at the hearse.
