NDLEA intercepts Europe-bound cocaine, meth at Lagos, Abuja airports
At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; and some courier companies, NDLEA agents have seized consignments of illicit drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, and its precursor chemical, ephedrine, bound for the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, and Cyprus.
“At least three traders at the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo area of Lagos: Nwudele Basil Christopher; Chiedu Ezenwani Francis; and Donatus Nwojiji have been arrested in connection with attempts to export 52.10 kilograms of ephedrine, a precursor chemical and active ingredient for the production of methamphetamine,” said Agency spokesman Femi Babafemi.
The gigantic sacks that were seized at the SAHCO export shed of the Lagos airport on January 31 and February 1 contained the illicit substances, which were hidden in bundles of fishing line.
It needed the diligent work of NDLEA agents and the use of sniffer dogs to be able to identify the intricate method of drug concealment.
Apeh Kelvin Ogbonna, 29, was caught trying to board Turkish Airlines flight TK0624, which was traveling via Istanbul to Cyprus, on Monday, February 13 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA, Abuja. His luggage contained 4.5 kilograms of methamphetamine that had been hidden in false bottoms.
The suspect said that prior to deciding to move to Cyprus to get a degree in business administration, he owned and operated a boutique business in Enugu.
A team of agents in Lagos intercepted two 400-gram shipments of cocaine bound for the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia at three different courier companies.
They were concealed within the walls of shipping containers. Following their discovery camouflaged in food items, two other consignments containing 500 grams and 100 grams of methamphetamine were also prevented from being delivered to New Zealand.
