New naira: Banks in Kano got zero allocation in four days, says commissioner
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has not distributed any fresh naira notes to banks in the state of Kano in the last four days, according to Muhammad Garba, the state’s commissioner for information.
The Kano governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, claimed in a statement on Friday that the redesign of the naira had put the state’s citizens through “unnecessary pain.”
He said that the state’s businesses had been impacted by the implementation of the cashless policy and accused the CBN of having “prejudice.”
The CBN is starving commercial banks of the money that is meant to be allocated to them, according to the state administration, given the daily amount of commerce in the North’s commercial hub, the statement adds.
According to all indicators, the CBN, a federal agency, has been turned to a tool for settling political scores by picking the incorrect moment to impose a policy on the populace that could have been enacted at the proper moment in the past.
“By denying people access to their hard-earned money, the general populace in the state has been put through unnecessary suffering, ostensibly to spark social disturbance that could result in the postponing of the eagerly anticipated general election slated for next week.
“The difficulty has been suffered by the people of Kano, who are renowned for maintaining a peaceful attitude even in the face of provocation.”
He asked locals to maintain their composure and not let voting in the general election deter them.
