Shettima departs Nigeria for 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg
Vice President Kashim Shettima left Abuja for Johannesburg, South Africa, to attend the 15th BRICS conference as President Bola Tinubu’s representative.
Shettima will attend the summit, which will take place at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24, according to a statement released yesterday in Abuja by Mr. Olusola Abiola, Director of Information in the Office of the Vice President.
President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, President Xi Jinping of China, President Luiz Lula da Silva of Brazil, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India are among the prominent leaders anticipated to attend the event.
The conference has also extended invitations to 73 dignitaries, including the UN Secretary General, the head of the African Union Commission, and the president of the New Development Bank.
The discussion during the event is anticipated to focus on global governance reform, sustainable development, innovation, and trade and investment facilitation.
Additionally, it will keep in touch with leaders from Africa and the Global South, concentrating on international geopolitics, commerce, and infrastructure growth.
Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa make up the BRICS group of five significant emerging and developing economies.
The group is responsible for more than 42% of the world’s population, 30% of its area, 23% of the world’s economy, and 18% of its trade.
One of its foundational principles is the belief that multilateralism and international law should serve as the cornerstones of a fair, balanced, and representative global political, economic, and financial infrastructure.
Senior government officials are traveling with the vice president to the meeting; he is scheduled to return home at the conclusion of the week.
